What you need to know about installing swimming pools in Howick


Swimming pools are permitted as an accessory use as per Howick’s Zoning By-law and must be located a minimum of 1.5 m (5 ft) from property line in the rear yard. Pools must be accompanied by a temporary fence during construction/assembly and protected by a 1.2 m (4 ft) high fence from the ground up, containing a lockable gate. If you are installing a pool, you will need to apply for a pool enclosure permit. A permit is not required for a pool less than .6 m (24 in) high. Have you received a building permit in the past? Did you contact the office for a final inspection? If not, please do so we can close your permit. This is the season that the Building Department is busy dealing with new permits and inspections. Please note that the Chief Building Official is only in the office on Tuesday and Thursdays of each week.
